The kitchen space is a very important part of any home, and I believe achieving an elegant and beautiful minimalist looking kitchen can improve the overall mood and experience of you and your guests.
Growing up in a family of interior designers, I have always appreciated beautiful spaces, especially minimalist ones. As such, in my appreciation of beautiful minimalist kitchens, here are 15 easy tips on how to create your dream minimalist kitchen!
15 Simple Tips on How to Create a Beautiful Minimalist Kitchen
1. Keep Everything Organized
The first tip is probably one of the easiest and effective to do. Keeping your utensils, kitchen and tableware organized helps remove clutter from your kitchen space. This will create a beautiful serene minimalist feel and look.
Keeping things organized also helps you easily access your kitchen items which can be really helpful. Assign designated places for each type of kitchen items. If possible keep them in a closed compartment. This will ensure there is no mess to be seen.
Every time after use of kitchen items, remember to keep them in those designated places for a lovely and orderly minimalist kitchen.
2. Keep Every Part Clean and Tidy (a lot of empty spaces)
The second tip relates closely to the first, which is to keep every part of your kitchen clean. A clean kitchen counter keeps your kitchen looking handsomely neat. This will also create a lot of beautiful empty spaces, which adds that minimalist look to the kitchen.
Make sure no food leftovers are around, and wipe the counter surfaces often. Also, make sure there are no dirty plates piling up in the kitchen sink. Clean regularly, arrange the kitchen furniture and make sure everything looks tidy and spotless.
3. Put Kitchen Items in Simpler Containers
The third tip is a nice one I got from watching a TV show (I don’t remember what it’s called.) In that TV show, a family was told to take out all the groceries that they bought from the supermarket, and put them into a simple jar or container, and labeling them. Such a cool concept!
Finding simple minimalist jars or containers for your cooking items such as sugar, salt or flour is not that difficult. Having them in simpler containers helps minimize the cluttered look of the kitchen space. Simple white jars or even transparent ones looks really neat.
4. Choose a Color Theme (and stick with it!)
If you’re planning to build your kitchen from scratch, this tip is essential. Before you do anything, choose a color theme for the kitchen walls, cabinets and furniture. This will ensure everything will look in harmony which gives that minimalist aesthetic.
Try to limit the color pallet to only 3 or less. Earthy color combinations or just plain white looks really great and elegant. If you are a single male, darker colors can work really nicely too!
You can also add a wooden table or items to your kitchen to add some natural feel. Wood color blends naturally with any kitchen color theme.
5. Buy Similarly Colored Kitchen Items
To complement your kitchen color theme, choose the same color items when possible. For example, pick a white toaster if most of your kitchenware is white. This will create a stylistic harmony and give that beautiful minimalistic vibe to your kitchen space.
You do not have to be too strict. You can also go for two colors like white and grey for different items. This will also gives that nice coherent feel to the items.
6. Pick Minimalist Design Appliances
The design and shape of your kitchen appliances such as coffee maker, toaster or fridge can impact the whole look and feel of your kitchen space. An ugly coffee maker can stick out like a sore thumb.
Picking nicely designed minimalist appliances is not that difficult and can also be a very fun shopping experience. Just make sure you pay attention to the shape and color of the items, and it becomes easy to choose.
7. Get Simplistic Utensils/Kitchenware
Beautifully designed utensils and kitchenware can also add to the nice minimalist look of your kitchen space. I believe for the most part, the most important factor is color. Try to pick a basic color like black or grey (or just simple bare metal) and not something crazy like bright red or bright yellow (unless that is your whole theme).
8. Buy Minimally Designed Tableware
Tableware such as cutlery, teapots and such can be easily overlooked when creating a minimalist kitchen. Beautifully designed minimalist tableware are easy to find and most of them are similarly priced (maybe even cheaper) than classical (or fancy) designed ones.
Beautiful minimalist tableware can even improve the mood and experience of your dining time. So choose the right ones next time you go tableware shopping!
9. Pick Minimally Designed Kitchen Furniture
Kitchen furniture are often big pieces of items in your kitchen space. As such, the aesthetics of them will impact the whole look of the space.
Try to choose modern and simply designed chairs and tables that can fit nicely with the whole theme of your kitchen. This will also create a nice impression to your guests.
If you are having a hard time, try looking for natural wooden furniture. They often blend really well with a minimalist kitchen design.
10. Opt for a Modern Induction Burner
Modern induction burners look beautifully sleek and minimalist when compared to traditional gas stove burners. Not to mention, they are also much safer and you don’t have to worry about gas leakages or replacing the tanks.
A seamlessly built-in induction burner to your kitchen countertop looks super neat and tidy. It also makes cleaning after cooking much easier and simpler.
Remember to have them installed when you are in the process of building a new kitchen.
12. Use Simple Lighting
The choice of lighting for your minimalist kitchen space is quite important.
Look for a modernly designed lighting. Make sure that they light the whole space really well. A poorly lit kitchen can look really dull and boring.
When possible, avoid table lamps and opt for hanging lights or wall lights. Also, choose the right color temperature for the bulbs. I prefer warm lighting as it gives your kitchen space a nice homey feel.
13. Pick Modern Kitchen Cabinets
You probably know what a traditional kitchen cabinet looks like. You can probably find them at your grandparents’ or relatives’ place. They usually have patterns or frames on the panels and I just think they look really bad.
Pick kitchen cabinets with modern, frameless design when possible. Also, if possible choose bare wood or at least with pseudo wooden finish. They look really good in my opinion. If you want to use plastic kitchen cabinet, have them painted with nice earthy colors, white or grey.
14. Install a Minimalist Sink
A lot of people like to think a sink is a sink. However, kitchen sinks can be very ugly in design. If you have a kitchen, you probably spend a lot of time with the sink. So getting a beautiful minimalist designed sink is a good investment in my opinion.
Try to pick a modern design sink with a nice minimalist faucet, tap and bowl. It will do wonders for your kitchen space.
15. Add a Plant (or Plants!)
Finally, just like most of my how-to guides, I love to add some nature as the last tip. Minimal spaces can seem a bit lifeless and empty. By adding a plant (or plants), I believe it can give life and joy to the space in nice way. This is something I learned from my mother. She just love plants!
Pick a nice minimalist pot for the plant to make it beautifully fit with the look and feel of your minimalist kitchen space.
It is not difficult to take care of a plant. Just remember to water them regularly. However, if you want a plant with less maintenance, you can opt for a nice cactus plant!
Wrapping Things Up
I believe, the kitchen is one of the most important part of your home. It is where you prepare food for yourself and the people you care about. As such, I believe having a nice minimalist kitchen can enhance your whole living experience and well being.
